Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About Boat, Sea-Doo, Canoe & Kayak Rentals
Have questions about renting a canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, Sea-Doo, fishing boat or pontoon boat in the Kawarthas? Our FAQ covers booking, delivery, pickup, security deposits, boating licence requirements, safety equipment, cancellation policies and rentals for Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, Algonquin Provincial Park and Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park.
Kawartha Adventure Rentals is located in Woodview, Ontario, just south of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park and about five minutes from Stony Lake on the Trent-Severn Waterway. You can pick up many rentals at our store, or we can deliver to select lakes, boat ramps, cottages, resorts and park access points depending on the rental type.
Do I need a boating licence or Pleasure Craft Operator Card to rent a Sea-Doo or boat?
We always recommend getting your Pleasure Craft Operator Card because it’s valid for life. If you don’t have one, we can complete a Canadian Coast Guard-approved Boaters Safety Checklist on the day of your rental. This acts as a temporary licence for the duration of your rental.
All operators of our motorized rentals must be at least 19 years old and present a valid G-class or equivalent driver’s licence. Passports are not accepted for driving purposes. You’ll also need to sign our waiver and rental agreement before departing. Our team will give you a safety briefing and show you how to operate the equipment so you feel comfortable on the water.
Do you require a security deposit and what does it cover?
Yes. We charge a refundable security deposit to the credit card on file, typically one day before your rental begins. The deposit is actually charged (not just held) and is refunded once the equipment is returned in the same condition; please allow up to 10 business days for the refund to appear on your statement. Deposit amounts vary by watercraft:
- Sea‑Doos, fishing boats and pontoon boats: $2 000
- Stand‑up paddleboards: $200
- Kayaks and canoes: $200–$500 depending on the model
- Kevlar canoes: $500
- Tubes, skis and other accessories: full replacement value
All renters are responsible for any damage that occurs to the watercraft, equipment or accessories during the rental period.
Do you deliver? What are my pickup and return options?
Yes. We deliver Sea-Doos, boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for rentals of two days or longer. Single-day deliveries may be possible depending on location, so please contact us to ask. We deliver within about a two-hour radius of our Woodview location, and the delivery fee is $1 per kilometre travelled, with a $65 minimum.
Deliveries start at 9 a.m. each day. One of our drivers will call you on the morning of your rental to confirm you’re available before they leave. We can’t guarantee exact delivery times. If we can’t reach you, we’ll move on to the next scheduled delivery for that driver and call again when another driver is available. If you won’t be available until a specific time, please let us know in advance so we can schedule around it.
You can also pick up many rentals at our Woodview location between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pontoon boats must be delivered. Sea-Doos and some boats can be picked up on trailers when booked as trailer packages. For canoes, kayaks and SUPs, we offer an after-hours pickup locker as a $20 add-on when booking.
If you’re returning equipment to our store, it must be back by 5 p.m. Late returns are charged $1 per minute after 5 p.m. For equipment we’re collecting, pickups work much like deliveries: one of our drivers will call before leaving so you know when to meet at the launch ramp. We try to leave rentals with you as long as possible on the final day, but if you need an early pickup, please let us know in advance.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations must be made no later than 72 hours before 9 a.m. on the first day of your rental to receive a full refund. You can cancel by email or by phone; if we can’t answer or it’s after hours, please leave a voicemail with your booking ID, your name and the rental type. We will cancel your reservation and send a confirmation email. Messages without this information will not be processed, and simply calling without leaving a message is not sufficient to cancel before the 72‑hour cutoff.
Cancellations within 72 hours or “no‑shows” forfeit the deposit and are charged the full rental amount. We don’t offer refunds for rain or cool weather—our season is short and conditions vary by lake—so your rental proceeds unless we deem conditions unsafe. In rare cases where we cancel or reschedule for safety reasons or policy violations, we’ll work with you to pick a new date.
What’s included in my rental?
Each rental comes with the safety gear appropriate for that type of craft:
- Canoes & kayaks: One paddle and one personal flotation device (PFD) per seat.
- Stand‑up paddleboards: One paddle, one ankle leash and one PFD.
- Sea‑Doos: Two PFDs plus the required safety equipment.
- Pontoon & fishing boats: Enough adult PFDs for the boat’s full capacity and the required safety kit.
If you need youth or child life jackets, please let us know before your booking starts and provide the weight of each child. We recommend bringing your own kids’ jackets because our stock is limited and offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis.
How do I reserve a rental, and do I need to book in advance?
You can reserve your rental online through our website, by calling our office during business hours, or in person at our Woodview location. For online or phone bookings, we accept payment by credit card only. If you book in person, you can pay the rental amount with debit or credit.
Security deposits must be placed on a credit card, not a debit card. The credit card used for the deposit must be in the name of the person making the booking, and we charge the deposit on the card on file the day before your rental starts.
We strongly recommend booking in advance, especially if you need delivery or are renting multiple items. This gives us time to prepare your equipment and plan our delivery routes. Same-day rentals are sometimes available, but we can’t guarantee delivery on short notice. For larger groups, booking ahead helps ensure we have enough boats, gear and staff ready for you.
I’ve never driven a Sea‑Doo before—can I still rent one?
Yes. No experience is required, and our staff will walk you through how to safely operate the Sea‑Doo before your rental so you feel confident before heading out. To rent a Sea‑Doo for use on the water you must be at least 19 years old and hold a valid driver’s licence. If you’re picking up a Sea‑Doo on a trailer as part of a package and towing it yourself, you must be at least 25 years old, have a valid driver’s licence and provide proof of car insurance.
When should I arrive for my rental, and what time can I pick up?
For store pickups, our office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and rentals can be picked up or returned during those hours. When you book, please let us know your estimated arrival time so we can have staff ready to help.
If you’re renting a canoe or kayak and can’t make it during regular hours, you can add an after-hours pickup locker for $20.
Are rentals 24-hour? When does the rental day end?
No. Our rentals are per calendar day, not 24-hour periods. You can pick up and return equipment between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on each rental day. Multi-day rentals let you keep the equipment overnight, but the final rental day still ends at 5 p.m.
How does delivery to Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park work?
For canoe and kayak rentals going into Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, we offer delivery to each park access point on a fixed schedule. Morning and afternoon drop‑off/pick‑up times are set for each access point (for example, Bottle Lake access at 10:35 a.m. and 3:05 p.m.; Anstruther Lake access at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.). When you book, you’ll choose an access point and time slot. Because the park doesn’t allow watercraft to be left unattended, you must meet our driver at the scheduled time.
If you’re running late, call us with your new ETA; we’ll do our best to adjust, but the scheduled stops take priority. Unnotified late arrivals may result in an extra delivery charge, since our routes are planned like a bus service and we may need to make a second trip. Custom delivery times are sometimes available if they don’t interfere with the fixed schedule. The fees for each access point vary based on distance from our base (for example, Bottle Lake delivery is $135, Anstruther Lake is $105, Wolf Lake is $93, Long Lake is $40, etc.).
Are you located on the water?
No—we’re not based at a marina, but we’re surrounded by water. Our Woodview location sits just south of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park and about five minutes from Stony Lake on the Trent-Severn Waterway, so you’re close to some of the best paddling and boating spots in the region.
You can pick up many rentals at our store, or we can deliver depending on the rental type. For Sea-Doo, pontoon boat and fishing boat rentals, we deliver to the nearest suitable public boat ramp, not directly to cottages or resorts. For canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, we can deliver directly to cottages, resorts or Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park access points.
Can I pick up a Sea-Doo and take it with me?
Yes, we offer Sea-Doo and trailer packages that can be picked up and towed to your destination. These are separate from the Sea-Doos we deliver. To pick up and tow a Sea-Doo package yourself, you must be at least 25 years old, have a valid class G or higher driver’s licence, and provide proof of car insurance.
You’ll also need a suitable vehicle for towing, a 2-inch trailer ball, and a 4-way plug for the trailer lights. If you don’t want to tow it yourself, we can deliver Sea-Doo rentals to the nearest suitable public boat ramp for your booking location.
Are pets allowed on rentals?
Yes, our rentals are pet friendly. You’re welcome to bring your dog or pet with you, but pets should have their own properly fitting life jacket. We do not include pet life jackets with rentals, so please bring one with you.
If you need one, we also sell pet PFDs in our retail store, but availability can vary. You are responsible for any damage caused by pets during the rental period.
Do you offer insurance or damage protection?
No, we do not offer extra insurance for rentals. The renter is responsible for any damage that happens during the rental period, including damage to the watercraft, equipment and accessories.
If you want extra coverage, we recommend checking with your credit card provider or your home, auto or cottage insurance company before your rental. Some policies may offer rental coverage or allow you to add temporary coverage for the rental period. The best approach is to treat the rental with care, avoid shallow or unfamiliar water, and operate it as if it were your own.
What is your fuel policy? Do I need to return the boat or Sea-Doo full?
All motorized rentals are sent out with a full tank of gas and must be returned full at the end of the rental. Many customers choose to have us refuel the boat or Sea-Doo for them because it is often easier and helps make sure the tank is completely full for the next renter.
Even if you refuel before returning, we still check and top up the tank back at our yard. If it only takes a very small amount to confirm the tank is full, we do not charge for it. If the rental is returned below full, the renter is responsible for the fuel used and any applicable refuelling charges.
Are there weight or capacity limits for each rental?
Yes. Every boat, Sea-Doo, canoe and kayak has its own maximum person capacity and weight limit. These limits can vary by rental unit, so please check the specific rental page before booking.
As examples, many Sea-Doos are rated for up to 3 people or 600 lbs, many pontoon boats are rated for up to 10 people or 611 kg / 1,346 lbs, and many fishing boats are rated for up to 4 people or 300 kg / 661 lbs. These are only examples, so always follow the capacity listed on the rental page for the exact unit you are booking.
What should I bring with me for my rental?
Please bring a valid driver’s licence or required ID, the credit card used for your security deposit, and anything you’ll need for a day on the water. We recommend sunscreen, drinking water, snacks, weather-appropriate clothing, towels, sunglasses, and a waterproof bag for phones or valuables.
For motorized rentals, anyone who plans to operate the Sea-Doo or boat must be present for the safety orientation with their valid driver’s licence. If you need youth or child life jackets, please let us know before your booking starts and provide each child’s weight.
Who needs to be present for the safety orientation?
Anyone who plans to operate a Sea-Doo or motorized boat must be present for the safety instruction and orientation before the rental begins. Each operator must have their valid driver’s licence with them.
Our staff will review the controls, safe operation, rental rules, and any important details for the specific watercraft before you head out. If someone is not present for the orientation, they are not permitted to operate the Sea-Doo or boat during the rental.
What are your office hours?
During the summer season, our Woodview store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rentals can be picked up and returned during those hours.
Spring and fall hours may vary, so please check the Contact section of our website for current hours. During the winter, we are open by appointment only, but rentals can still be booked in advance for the upcoming season.
If you are booking a canoe or kayak and need to pick up after hours, you can add an after-hours pickup locker to your booking for $20.
Do you rent camping gear and canoe trailers?
Yes. In addition to canoe, kayak, paddleboard, Sea-Doo, fishing boat and pontoon boat rentals, we also offer camping gear rentals and canoe trailer rentals.
Canoe trailers are a great option for larger groups, customers who want to pick up multiple canoes or kayaks, or anyone heading farther away for a paddling trip, including trips to Algonquin Provincial Park. Camping gear availability may vary by date, so we recommend booking ahead, especially during peak summer weekends.
Do you rent canoes for camping trips in Algonquin Provincial Park?
Yes. You can rent canoes from us for camping trips in Algonquin Provincial Park. We do not have set Algonquin delivery times, but we may be able to offer custom canoe delivery to the lower section of the park, including Kingscote Lake Access Point #15 and the unofficial Access Point #15A at Harmony Resorts.
You can also pick up canoes at our Woodview location and take them to any Algonquin Provincial Park access point. For larger groups, we offer canoe trailer rentals so you can transport multiple canoes or kayaks into the park yourself.
Do you offer canoe rentals for Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park?
Yes. We offer canoe rentals for trips into Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park. We do not have set delivery times for this park, but custom delivery may be available. Please contact us for pricing and availability.
You can also pick up canoes at our Woodview location and take them to the park yourself. For larger groups, we offer canoe trailer rentals so you can transport multiple canoes or kayaks for your backcountry camping trip.
